Fern, Autumn
Dryopteris erythrosora
Fertilizing Code:04/08 to 04/09
Pruning Code:10/23 to 10/24

This is an evergreen, clumping variety and at first appearance can be similar to the Christmas fern. However, during the spring and fall when cool weather sets in, the foliage turns red for a beautiful effect, especially if plants are massed together.

Care Instruction:
Soil and Moisture: These plants depend on consistent moisture and soils that are rich with organic matter and drain freely. The roots appreciate being kept cool, so mulch appropriately.
Fertilizing: Ferns are not heavy feeders so one application of 10-10-10 fertilizer in the spring is sufficient. Be sure to water immediately after application to avoid burning the foliage.
Pruning: Once a hard frost has withered the leaves, simply cut them off and remove the debris.
Division: It is not necessary to divide these plants for health reasons, however, if doing so to propagation divide them in the early spring just as new growth is emerging.
